AAM boss elected regional treasurer

Athletics Association of Malawi (AAM) president Godfrey Phiri was elected Southern Africa Athletics Association treasurer general on Friday; arguably the first Malawian to hold such a position.

The big post, which assures Malawi of funding consideration when hosting international events, follows Phiri’s attendance of the regional body’s annual general meeting held in Durban, South Africa on Friday.
“This is the first time to see a Malawian holding this big post. I am dedicating this to all Malawians because the region has put trust on Malawi. As you know, in the past — from 2007 to 2011 — I was general secretary for the regional body and Malawi benefitted,” Phiri said when breaking the news.
Phiri, whose body hosts the Southern Africa Cross-Country in Blantyre on Saturday, dedicated his election to his family that would have to sacrifice while he travels attending commitments of the new job across the borders.
During the AGM which involved 14 member associations, Moses Bantsi of Botswana, who apparently offered the regional cross-country to Malawi after Seychelles pull-out, retained his seat as the regional body’s president deputised by Salifa Magide of Mozambique whereas the general secretary is Secer Vivian Gunguram of Mauritius. The term of office is four years.
